SYLLABUS FOR SECOND GRADE!

READING

progress is monitored through Weekly Assessments, Unit Assessments, AR tests, Success Maker Lab, and STAR. Your child should practice reading nightly.  Oral reading practice is crucial in 2nd grade.  Your child should be able to read 90 words in one minute by the end of 2nd grade.  Retelling what has been read is also assessed.  Trade books, basal reading stories, fluency practice pages, and library books will be sent home to provide reading practice for your child.  Students will read a wide variety of texts and genres each week and will be tested on vocabulary and comprehension skills from cold reads on Friday.  Students will have A.R. time throughout the day and on Fridays as well.    You will receive graded assessments and progress reports for your child on a weekly basis.

Spelling

Spelling words are assigned weekly on Monday. Words usually contain a common pattern.  Words are practiced at school daily and additional practice is assigned for homework.  Students will be tested on these skills each Friday.

Math

Go Math is taught in second grade.  Students are given timed fact tests every five lessons.  Please review facts every night. Math homework will be assigned after each lesson.  Students will also have"Fact Practice" every night (Except Friday).  All math homework should be signed by the person reviewing homework with student.  Mid Chapter and Chapter Assessments are given with each chapter we study.  You can go to my helpful links page and log into thinkcentral.com.  Your child can log in and practice the skills we are learning in each chapter with exciting interactive games!

Language
Students will do Daily Language Review each morning.  They will be assessed on certain skills presented during this review and the grammar skill presented from the Reading textbook.  Students will have grammar homework one to two nights a week.  The skills that are presented and practiced each day will be tested on Fridays.

Science and Social Studies

Your child will receive grades of S, N, and U for these subjects.   Posters, projects, and research are incorporated into these areas of study and are used as part of their assessments.  We love to have hands on activities in my classroom!
